About self assessment

Self assessment is one of the most misunderstood obligations in the UK tax system. Most people know it applies to the self-employed, but the reality is considerably broader. If you are a sole trader, a landlord receiving rental income, a higher-rate taxpayer with untaxed investment income, a company director, or a CIS subcontractor in the construction industry, HMRC requires you to file a return each year. The obligation does not disappear if you are unaware of it — and penalties for missing or late returns start immediately, regardless of whether you actually owe any tax.

What catches most people out is not the January 31st deadline itself, but the preparation required to meet it properly. Pulling together a full year's income, identifying and documenting all allowable expenses, and understanding which reliefs and allowances apply to your specific situation is genuinely complex. Sole traders consistently underestimate the range of costs they can legitimately deduct. Tools and equipment, vehicle costs, business travel, home office expenses, professional subscriptions, training related to your trade — all of these reduce your tax bill, but only when they are claimed correctly. We see clients regularly who have been overpaying HMRC for years simply because no one had reviewed their situation properly.

Late self assessment is one of the most common situations we deal with, and one of the most important to address promptly. There is a widespread but mistaken belief that engaging with HMRC about an overdue return makes things worse. In reality the opposite is true. HMRC's penalty structure escalates the longer a return remains unfiled — the initial £100 penalty is followed by daily charges after three months, then a further percentage-based penalty after six and twelve months. Acting early genuinely limits the financial damage, and in many cases initial penalties can be appealed where there is a reasonable excuse.

We handle self assessment for sole traders, freelancers, landlords, CIS subcontractors, and company directors across Yorkshire. Our process is straightforward: we gather your income and expense information, review every legitimate deduction, prepare your return for approval, and submit directly to HMRC. You receive confirmation of submission and a clear breakdown of exactly what you owe and when. If your records need organising before your return can be filed accurately, our bookkeeping service handles that as part of the same process.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about self assessment — answered directly.

HMRC issues an automatic £100 penalty for a late return, regardless of whether you owe any tax. Additional daily penalties of £10 per day apply after three months (up to a maximum of £900), with a further percentage-based penalty at six months and twelve months. The sooner you act, the lower the total cost. We can help you file what is outstanding and, in some cases, appeal initial penalties where there is a reasonable excuse.

You first need to register with HMRC for self assessment, which must be done by 5th October in the tax year following when you became self-employed or started receiving untaxed income. If you have missed this deadline, you can still register — the important thing is to act rather than continue to wait. We handle the registration and manage everything from there, including any years that need to be filed to bring you up to date.

Yes. We work with clients who are one, two, or more years behind. There is no judgement — we assess what is outstanding, work through each year systematically, and get everything filed correctly. HMRC does not go away, and the penalty exposure grows over time. Getting compliant quickly is always the right decision, and we make the process as straightforward as possible.

Yes. All CIS subcontractors are required to file a self assessment return each year. CIS deductions already made by contractors count as tax paid on account and are offset against your annual liability. Many subcontractors are entitled to a substantial refund once their expenses are accounted for — but only if the return is filed. We handle both the CIS compliance and the self assessment together, ensuring every penny of refund is claimed.

Common allowable expenses include tools and equipment, vehicle costs (either actual costs or the HMRC approved mileage rate), mobile phone and broadband used for business, work clothing that is a uniform or protective wear, professional subscriptions and memberships, advertising and marketing, and home office costs calculated on a reasonable basis. The exact position depends on your trade. We review every legitimate expense with each client to ensure nothing that should be claimed is left out.
