About bookkeeping training

There is a meaningful difference between a business owner who has been shown how to navigate accounting software and one who genuinely understands what they are doing and why. The first can enter transactions and produce a report. The second understands the underlying principles well enough to catch their own errors, interpret the numbers the software produces, and ensure that their records are an accurate, ongoing reflection of their business rather than a periodic source of stress and uncertainty. Our bookkeeping training is designed to develop the second — not to run through the features of a platform.

The situations that lead business owners to seek training vary considerably. Some are new to self-employment and want to start correctly rather than drift into bad habits. Some have been managing their own books for years using an approach that mostly works but contains errors they are not aware of. Some have recently switched to cloud accounting software and are unsure whether they are using it as intended. Some have received a shock at year-end — an unexpected tax bill, a VAT problem, accounts that do not reflect what they thought was happening — and want to understand why. In every case, the right training pays for itself quickly through better records, lower accountancy fees, and the avoidance of problems that stem directly from bookkeeping errors.

We offer training on Xero, QuickBooks, FreeAgent, and Sage — the platforms used by the great majority of small businesses in the UK. Sessions are conducted using your own business accounts, not a training demo or sandbox environment. This is deliberately different from generic software training: you learn in the context of your actual business, working through real transactions, understanding why they are coded as they are, and leaving with a clear picture of the current state of your own records. Sessions can be conducted in person at our office in Wath upon Dearne or remotely via video call — whatever is most practical.

It is worth being clear about what bookkeeping training is not a substitute for. If you operate as a limited company, are registered for VAT, work within CIS, or have complex income from multiple sources, there are elements of your compliance that require qualified professional support regardless of how proficiently you maintain your daily records. Training is not a replacement for an accountant — it is a complement to one. For clients who complete training and later want full managed bookkeeping support, our bookkeeping service is the natural next step, and the transition is seamless.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about bookkeeping training — answered directly.

No. We calibrate every session to the individual. Whether you have never opened an accounting platform before, have been using one incorrectly for years, or are somewhere in between, we start from where you are and build from there. There is no assumption of prior knowledge and no embarrassment in asking basic questions — understanding the fundamentals correctly from the start is exactly what the training is for.

We offer training on Xero, QuickBooks, FreeAgent, and Sage. If you already use a particular platform, we train you on that. If you are starting fresh and have not yet chosen software, we will advise on which platform is best suited to your business type and size before the training begins. We do not have a commercial relationship with any software provider — our recommendation is based entirely on what is right for your situation.

Both options are available. In-person sessions are held at our office in Wath upon Dearne, South Yorkshire — accessible from Barnsley, Rotherham, Doncaster, and the surrounding areas. Remote sessions via video call work well for practical demonstrations on cloud-based platforms and are available to clients anywhere in Yorkshire. We choose whichever format works best for you.

This depends on your starting point and the complexity of your business. Most clients reach a confident, independent level after two to four hours of hands-on, focused training. We offer sessions as a single block or split across two shorter sessions — whatever fits your schedule. We will give you a realistic estimate of the time needed after our initial conversation.

We stay available after every training session for follow-up questions. If you encounter a situation you are not sure how to handle, or want to check that something looks correct, you can get in touch and we will answer clearly. We want you to feel genuinely equipped — not just to have completed a session. If you later decide you want full managed bookkeeping support, we can take that on as a natural progression.
